Chamber Ensembles
Red Tails of Blue Skies
Red Tails of Blue Skies was commissioned by the Trumpet Educators' Initiative in 2024. It is a programmatic work for trumpet ensemble inspired by red-tailed hawks. The composer began noticing these birds near her home in northern Virginia and became captivated with their flight and movement. Red-tailed hawks have a wide territory, spanning North and Central America. They can be found in virtually every biome, from sandy deserts to urban centers. While such a common bird may not seem spectacular, it is precisely their ubiquity that made the composer decide to use them as the inspiration for this work.

While the individuals that came together to commission this work live in very different places across the United States, red-tailed hawks can be found in each location. Any performer practicing this work could take a short journey and likely easily find the very creatures that inspired it. Red-tailed hawks may be common birds, but there is a connecting thread within that commonality. The work celebrates the nobility Halco-Haack perceives in the birds, the excitement and intensity of watching them dive to hunt, and the grace with which they soar.
Twilight and Betwixt
Twilight and Betwixt (2025) is a representation of the passing of light from dusk, through night, and into dawn. Both the visual and emotional aspects of these hours are inspirations for the work. Varied hues of the waxing and waning light of sunrises and sunsets are part of the inspiration. The composer’s interpretation of those scenes is another informing aspect: the warm tranquility of both twilights, of endings and beginnings, and the solemn, quiet, and sometimes hollow, sense of the darkest parts of the night.

Iowan Vignette
Iowan Vignette (2022) was commissioned by and written for Flint Angeroth Franks, a trumpet player and friend of the composer. The inspiration for the work comes from both the geography and history of the lands surrounding Dubuque, Iowa, where Angeroth Franks and Halco-Haack met. The piece presents slices of Iowa, as parts of a whole, rather than reflective of the entire state and its history. Iowan Vignette tells the stories of different moments that can be experienced throughout the diverse geography of Iowa.

The work honors the Mississippi River, the backbone of the Midwest; it reflects the force of nature that is a storm ripping across the open plains; it shares a hazy summer day lost in the heat; and balances it all with splendor of the natural beauty found, though often overlooked, within Iowa.
January Dusk
January Dusk (2017) is about imagery. For those who have been in the Midwest in the winter, they might recall the soft hues that paint the sky when the sun sets. Pastel shades decorate the clouds and snow covered landscape. This work is intended to be a musical reflection of such a vista.
Essay No. 1
Second Edition (2025)
Essay No. 1 for Euphonium and Piano explores three moods: one meditative and fragile; one sharp and aggressive; and one warm and lush. Through these characters, the performer is able to demonstrate the lyrical and technical abilities of the euphonium. The instrument is a platform for profound emotional interpretation, and Essay No. 1 was written to feature both the euphonium’s expressive qualities as well as its technical capabilities.
Essay No. 2
Essay No. 2 for Tuba and Piano (2025) is a showcase work for the tuba. Similar to Essay No. 1, this work puts on display the range of technical and lyrical capabilities of the instrument. Essay No. 2 highlights and contrasts two extremes: soft, delicate, and fragile (not typically associated with the instrument), and loud, bombastic, and dark (much more commonly associated with the tuba). This was done to demonstrate the versatility of the instrument and enrich the available solo literature.
